Explore stories of colonization and slavery while discovering the Black heritage that shaped the city. • Starting at the Opera House, I’ll take you through some of Madrid’s most notable streets, revealing the colonial history hidden in plain sight. • You’ll learn about the roles monarchs and the Catholic Church played in the slave trade as we visit the Royal Palace and discuss the “Casa de los Negros,” as well as Almudena Cathedral’s ties to the era. We’ll also explore Plaza Mayor’s history of slave markets and executions and uncover Carlos III’s involvement in the trade at Puerta del Sol. • Discover the influence of Black art and literature on Madrid as we visit Plaza de Ramales, honoring Black Spanish painter Juan de Pareja, and stop at historic sites like the San Fernando Fine Arts Academy and Iglesia de San Ginés. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of Black contributions and resilience, the lasting impacts of colonization, and unique recommendations for further exploring Madrid.

Step into the ring with a Spanish boxing champion

My boxing class makes it easier than ever to step into the ring for the first time. Strap on some gloves at my gym, Fightland Azca, and discover power you might not know you had. • I’ll welcome you to the gym, discuss the history of boxing in Spain, share the story of Fightland, and show you how to wrap your hands like a pro. • After a jump-rope warmup, I’ll demonstrate boxing fundamentals such as the guard stance, foot movements, and main punches using pads. • Once you’ve got the basics down, we’ll pair off for several exercises. Finally, you’ll get time with your own heavy bag so you can put your new knowledge and skills to work. When the final bell rings, we’ll have time to talk about your experience and take pictures around the gym. Don’t be surprised if you walk away feeling like a champ. Join me as I bring my decades of dance experience to a beginner-friendly choreography class designed to put rhythm in your feet and a smile on your face. • We’ll start with introductions before easing into a gentle warmup with some stretches and clapping, focusing on our posture and rhythm and helping us connect with the spirit of Spanish dance. • Next, we’ll dive into foundational techniques, practicing graceful arm positions and footwork like the golpe and the planta. We’ll layer these elements together, building coordination, balance, and confidence to the beat of authentic Spanish music. • Finally, we’ll put it all into practice with a choreographed number that’s rooted in the historic culture of Spain. After a calming cool-down, you’ll leave with some new skills and a deeper connection to one of Spain’s historic pastimes.
